50th Day!

Can you believe we've been in Kindergarten for 50 days already?! Time flies when your having fun :)

Check out our 50's kids dressed to impress for the 50th day of school:

Mr/Mrs. Kueny, Mrs. Gasparovic, and Mrs. Ferriera came in to lend a helping hand at our 50th day centers.

Mr. Kueny ran the record center where kinders traced, cut out, and made records that had numbers that were greater than or less than 50.

Ava working on her "less than 50" record.

Mrs. Gasparovic ran our coke float center. At this center, kinders made predictions whether they thought the ice cream would sink or float in the coke. Almost all of their predictions were right! After helping make the floats and taste testing, kinders graphed if they liked or disliked the floats.

Mrs. Ferriera ran the "Then and Now" snack table where we got to enjoy yummy hot

dogs for snack. During snack, kinders compared things from the 1950's and now.

Our last center was "Race to 50!" Ask your kinder how to play at home!

Batty for Kinder

We got to meet with our 4th grade buddies from Ms. Lyon's class. Kinders and 4th graders listened to the story Bat Jamboree. After the story was over, our buddies helped us with our fine motor skills--tracing and cutting our batty craft.

After making our bats, our 4th grade buddies shared some really fun Halloween books with our kinders. We can't wait to meet with our buddies again next month!

Kyah and her buddies reading.

In Literacy, we have been working hard on retelling and sequencing events in a story. We read the story There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bat and kinders practiced sequencing and retelling with a buddy. Our friends loved this activity and we can't wait to practice again with There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves!

In Math, we have been working hard solving addition and subtraction number stories. For Halloween, we read a book called Ten Timid Ghosts . As we read the story, we practiced subtraction with our "10 ghosts" and a "haunted house."

Kinders took their ghosts and haunted houses home with them to practice their subtraction with you!

We continued to practice addition and subtraction in our centers. We are doing a really great job! Check out Reagan adding pumpkins:

Here's a peek into some of our centers last week...

Tyler and Abby working hard at our Fundations center.

Kayleigh and Anthony practicing counting and writing their numbers at the Smartboard center.

Ryan and Anthony comparing numbers at the Math center. We have been working greater than, less than, and equal to.

And....last, but not least, a BIG thank you to my wonderful room mom, Mrs. Gasparovic, and all of my amazing parents who helped make our Halloween party a huge success :)

Fire Safety

This week we learned all about fire safety. Before starting our unit, we went on a picture walk. Students worked with partners and visited various pictures around them room. They shared what they knew and thought of fire safety tips at each picture with their buddy.

Emma and Tyler discussing how you should never play with matches.

Reagan sharing what she knew about feeling a door before opening it.

We also read books and watched some really cool videos all about fire safety.

...and even played fire math games!

By Friday, we were all fire EXPERTS! Our firefighter friends were pretty impressed with how much our kinders knew! We met Sparky, fireman Raso, and fireman Bob.

Fireman Bob brought all of his fire equipment with him, and showed us how they get dressed to fight a fire. We learned what each piece was and why firemen use it.

Shapes all around us!

This week was all about shapes. We read a ton of shape books, including one of our favorites, Ed Emberley's The Wing on a Flea: A Book about Shapes.
The book taught us that shapes are all around us, we just have to look close to find them. After reading, kinders had a chance to find different shapes around our classroom. Some of us even found some shapes during snack time!

Reagan found a circle and Anthony found a rectangle.

Isabella found a circle, too!

Aubrey and her rectangle snack.

We've been working on a class book about shapes during writer's workshop. Check out Emily's wonderful writing!!

An oval can be a surfboard.

We also worked and some fun shape centers this week.

Te'Asia sorting objects by shape.

Some friends playing shape BINGO with Mrs. Harverson.

Ava working on her shape book.

Learning all about shapes with the shape song.

Apple Day

A big thanks to all of our wonderful kinder parents who made Apple Day such a success! We had such a fun day and loved all of the apple centers and our yummy apple snack.

Mr. Kueny ran our apple patterning center. The kinders really had a great time making, reading, and extending different apple patterns. Then, they had a chance to stamp their own patterns using apples. Earlier in the week, we learned that the seeds inside apples make a star shape. Kinders were really excited when they could see the star shape in their apple prints!

At our snack center, kinders got to taste yummy apple cupcakes that Mrs. Wurst sent in for us to enjoy. As they ate snack, Mrs. Lenzi read a book that taught us all about Johnny Appleseed.

Mrs. Gasparovic helped out at our 10 Apples Up On Top center. Kinders practicd tracing/writing their numbers 1-10 and arranging them in order--on top of their heads!!

Ethan practicing writing his numbers.

Brady's 10 Apples Up On Top!

When they finished, Mrs. Gasparovic read Ten Apples Up On Top. We really love listening to that book!

At our graphing center, Mrs. Galanti helped kinders taste test red delicious, golden delicious, and granny smith apples. After trying each kind, kinders graphed their favorite and worked on our classbook.

We also got to celebrate Aubrey's 5th birthday! Happy birthday to you, CHA CHA CHA!!

Busy Being Bucketfillers!

On Monday, we had a very special visitor, Mrs. Hansbury! Mrs. Hansbury is the guidance counselor at our school. Once a month, she will come into our room and teach us a lesson about being a good friend and making good choices. This month, she shared a story called Have You Filled A Bucket Today? We learned that everyone carries an invisible bucket that holds our thoughts and feelings. When you say or do nice things for others, you fill their bucket and your bucket too. When you are a bucket filler, you make yourself and others around you happy. However, when you say or do mean things, you dip not only your own bucket, but someone else's as well. Mrs. Hansbury encouraged all of us to be bucket fillers. After the story, kinders shared ways they could be bucket fillers.

We spent this week learning/reviewing our colors. We read A LOT of color books including Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes and Elmer (two of our favorites).

During shared reading, we practiced one-to-one correspondence while reading our color mini books.
Check out Abigail pointing to each words as she reads.

Kayleigh coloring each circle to match the color word.

Aubrey working at our fine motor center lacing her letters!

Last year during circle time, I decided to try out calendar journals to make my kinders accountable for their own learning. I really liked using them and so did the kids, so I decided to bring them back this year. So far, so good :)

We use our calendar journals everyday to practice:
1. Number formation/writing
2. Identifying numbers
3. Tally marks
4. Graphing

Ryan practicing writing his numbers.
